We are highlighting two stories this week in the FLiP News Digest.

The first is an interview with Elizabeth Dale, who was recently appointed Vice President for Institutional Advancement of Drexel University in Philadelphia. As Drexel gears up for a capital campaign, Ms. Dale has been asked to provide an assessment of the school’s fundraising capability.  The Triangle, The Drexel Student Newspaper, talked to Ms. Dale about why students should be involved in a capital campaign. What do you think – should students serve on a campaign committee?

Our second story is an exciting development in philanthropy education. Indiana University’s School of Philanthropy has staffed the country’s first endowed chair in fundraising. Adrian Sargeant, an expert in fundraising from England, has been named to the Robert F. Hartsook Chair in Fundraising at Indiana University. More evidence of philanthropy in the mainstream!

Good afternoon FLiPs! We have two interesting articles for you to check out this week. First, take a look at this article by onPhilanthropys publisher Tom Watson. Tom discusses philanthropy trends for the next generation of givers. As our careers advance, the next generation will become our principal donors. It is vital that we understand their motivations and mindsets. Tom’s post goes somewhat hand in hand with FLiP’s “Generous Nation” post from last week. Is giving money away becoming an American “value”? Will it be more central to our lives in the future?

Also in the vein of trends in philanthropy, take a look at this New York Times article about philanthropy from coast to coast. In this article the Times profiles the NewTithing Group, which uses an interesting (and controversial) formula to determine which states have the most philanthropic populations. You may be surprised at what they discovered.

FLiP News Digest

The news digest this week only has one story: google.org.

If Google’s innovative, “for-profit charity” works well, we will see this type of philanthropy more and more as our careers go on. With the constraints of 501(c)3 status gone, google.org will be able to lobby government agencies, fund start-up companies, and even partner with venture capitalists.

As Google continues to soar, we expect that Google.org will soar too, but if the day comes that Google gets cash-strapped, will the stockholders demand the money be spent on helping Google recover? Charities counting on google.org’s support may find themselves at the whim of the economy.

The long and short of it is, all FLiP’s should watch this story as it develops because it could impact the future of all of our careers.

Because we ourselves are FLiPs, we’re just trying to come up with features that we would love to use. Our conversations often wrap around to the fact that we’d like an easy way to keep up-to-date with industry news. So starting today we will be posting the latest relevant philanthropic news, in digest form, on Thursday evening.
