Good Redesign Example
If your organization's website is in dire need of a redesign and you need some inspiration, then look at Global Giving's newly redesigned site. Smart Web 2.0 design: bold, lots of white space, center alignment, big words for actions such as Find, Do, and See. They've created a nice motif with their colors and small graphic touches (nice birds). The font type, buttons, and photos all work to create a very modern-looking and usable website.
The page has information, but they obviously know what to bubble up to the homepage. They didn't stuff their homepage with projects and information. The page breathes and provides information without overwhelming the visitor. I also like that they gave more emphasis to their "giving cart". That's sharp.
It's a big step from their past designs (see graphic): left-aligned, too much text, no way to focus on a project and get a handle on what the user should be seeing. The top login/purchase links were lost in too much whitespace with no focus on the page. Granted, they lost their categories on the homepage with redesign, but that's OK.
Global Giving has definitely gone from caterpillar to butterfly with their redesign. Their new site should entice more donors and project managers with this great step forward in their site presentation.
